Israel Should Face War Crimes Charges

The Islamic Republic of Iran seeks to pursue the prosecution of Israel through international channels for its crimes committed against humanity in Gaza that has so far left over 2,000 dead and 10,000 others injured, mostly women and children.

According to Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, along with political, diplomatic and humanitarian support, Tehran has put legal support for Palestinians on its agenda to bring to justice the Israeli war criminals.

“Consultations have already been held with international legal experts, because among the regional and Western countries, there exists the potential to activate that mechanism,”? the Iranian official says.

Many international organizations and human rights advocates are likewise convinced that Israel has indeed committed crimes against humanity during its unjustified attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip, especially on UN refugee centers, schools and hospitals.

In this respect, Pierre Krahenbuhl, the head of United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), whose agency runs the schools in question, says “the Israeli attacks have killed mostly civilians and are a violation of international law”? - a fact Tel Aviv no longer seems to be seriously trying to dispute.

It is an open secret now that Israel does enjoy fundamental support on the part of the United States and the European Union. And the US Congress has just voted to help fund Israel's "Iron Dome" missile system to the tune of $225 million.

As a consequence, Israel, roaring its obscene defiance at an outraged world, continues its unacceptable and indefensible barbaric attacks with no end in sight but the one preferred and openly backed by its callous leaders: Ethnic cleansing and genocide in Gaza, where according to the UNRWA head, “the world stands disgraced.”?

Nevertheless, Tehran, along with the civil society and a number of renowned war crimes prosecutors in the West believe that Tel Aviv should face war crimes charges at the International Court of Justice at The Hague.

They argue that during any war or conflict, civilians and places like schools, hospitals and religious sites are protected under various international statutes, including the Geneva Conventions. Consequently, they say, those who kill civilians or damage these internationally protected sites are always taking the risk of being charged with crimes against humanity.

As such, despite the UN Security Council’s inaction and flagrant indifference, we are undeniably edging towards the position where the civil society and the international citizen no longer accept that the ongoing war crimes and atrocities in the Gaza conflict go unaccounted for.

Into the argument, even if Israel is not signed up to the International Court of Justice (just like the United States), the regime is still not immune from legal pursuit of prosecution. Things have changed now and Tel Aviv cannot and shouldn’t be allowed to once again get away with injustice, genocide and ethnic cleansing in the coastal sliver.
